Speakers at yesterday's Good eHealth seminar attended to issues regarding the implementation of effective eHealth practices and the assessment of economic benefits.The workshop outlined approaches and methods for improving patient care, the use of web-based nationwide medical records, creating efficient cross border healthcare access and the application of ICTs to help treat chronic illnesses. Emphasis was placed the integreation of knowledge between medical providers and technologists as a means to streamline existing healthcare practices and better attend to patient needs. A key topic of discussion were economic eHealth benefits and possible investor concerns. Mr. Alexander Dobrev, representing empirica, stressed the importance of time and patience to realize a net value in ICT programs. "There is no fixed long-term strategy," Dobrev said, "but eHealth success is possible with a pragmatic, step-by-step approach." Mr. Tom Jones, TanJent Consultancy, also examined current eHealth services across Europe and evidence of their economic benefits. More comfortable Also addressed were means to overcome reluctance of some to the implementation of advanced technology in medicine. Dr. Greg Mogel, representing Telemedicine and Advanced Technology RC, believes steps must be taken to make both healthcare providers and patients feel more comfortable with eHealth programs."Technology has always played a role in healthcare," Mogel said. "From the first time doctors stopped putting their ear to a chest it was considered advanced technology". Nevertheless, many questions and concerns still arise with the use of eHealth technologies. Mogel stated a need "to develop a generation of healthcare providers, not just technologists or administrators but nurses and physicians who embrace eHealth" in order to ease the transition.
